Design and Build Quality -

From the get-go, the a-Jays One+ earphones give a sense of real quality. The packaging itself even lends to this impression. The earphones come in a very robust soft-touch coated black plastic oval shaped box.Inside the box you’ll find the earphones themselves, user manual, and one of the best assortment of different sized earbuds I’ve seen in an entry level pair of earphones. There are 5 different sizes total (4 in the box and 1 already on the earphones) that should accommodate all but the most extreme sized ears.

On the working end of things, the One+ uses an 8.6mm dynamic driver, which seems to be the same one used in all of Jays’ a-Jays line-up. This driver gives the a-Jays a very warm, pleasing sound signature. They are a little bassy, but not anything that will tire the listener out during long sessions. As far as high-end resolution (treble), they actually are surprising performers in this area, having a nice bright (but not overbearing) tone to the higher frequencies with good clarity. And being dynamic drivers, with more use (break in), the drivers should open up more and more over time, further enhancing the sound signature.

In use, the inline mic/remote is a welcome feature, and works just as advertised. Click once to play/pause your music, two clicks will move you forward one track, and three quick clicks will take you back one track, and these controls also seem to work with all iOS apps that support it (I tested it with Pandora). The mic seems to allow great sound quality when on a call using the earphones, as none of my test callers ever noticed that I wasn’t using the phone’s own mic. For Android users, Jays offers a free android app called “Jays Headset Control” that allows customization of what different series of taps and presses on the remote’s button do.

The cables are a flat-ribbon style as opposed to the more traditional standard round profile, which helps a bit with avoiding irritating cable tangles, and should add a bit of strength to the cables as well. The overall finish on the a-Jays is a matte, soft touch black rubberized surface that is only broken by the white printed “a-Jays One+” just below the earbuds, and the in-line one-button remote/mic about halfway down the right side earbud cord. This remote/mic allows the user to take calls while listening to music, and also gives play/pause, track skip ahead and back capabilities.

The headphone jack is an L-shaped one which I find a lot better than the straight ones. It prevents any damage to the connection and with it being very thick you shouldn’t have to worry about it ripping. I’ve found it fits just as easily in the pocket too.

They seem to be of good quality even before listening to them. They are very well packed and it’s even a little tough getting through to it. They fit well and relaxed although it seems a little loose and I would feel like they were going to fall off. It was comfortable but not firm enough.

The sound on the a-Jays One+ is really Clear and you can hear both highs and lows of the songs. It was also well-balanced. The bass isn’t that loud.It seemed a bit flat as some points.

With them being in-ear you get pretty good noise isolation if you get the right fit. They easily block out most noise and also isolate the sound into your ears so there is barely any sound leakage. But like I said, you really have to get the perfect fit to feel and hear the full effect.

Overall, a-Jays One+ are really amazing at a price of $60 from the a-Jays website, you’re definitely getting exactly what you pay for.

Build quality : 

The battery’s back cover is solid, and feels sturdy. Battery life :

In our review, we found the 2,500mAh stock battery inside the Samsung Galaxy Note to offer a full day with moderate-to-heavy use. Of course, “moderate-to-heavy” use, like any smartphone usage, differs from person to person. However, the generally accepted idea is that you’ll be fine for a day in most cases carrying the Note.

Once you pop in this extended battery things start to change. You’ll first be surprised to see that your battery icon is still showing a fully charged battery after a couple of hours of usage; that’s when you go into the settings and double check. While you’re there, you’ll most probably enable the battery percentage display in the status bar and you’ll love how slowly it will start decreasing.

Our daily usage, while reviewing this accessory, wasn’t at all different from the way we use phones that we review. That means having multiple email accounts set up with push enabled, various social media applications, GPS navigation or mapping, heavy WiFi and data-based browsing, weather apps and widgets, streaming music from Spotify, YouTube video playback, plus the regular daily five-to-ten calls and up to five text messages in addition to ten-to-fifteen emails sent (and more than 50 being received).

Under those circumstances, just before our Galaxy Note finally died, the system reported a battery life of 1 days 2 hours 36 minutes and some spare seconds. Screen-on time reported was 8 hours 16 minutes.

Note: On our first run, with the exact similar usage conditions, we only got 1 day and 5 hours while the second run improved to 1 days and 11 hours. Batteries tend to improve over the first couple of cycles after which they start to constantly deteriorate.

On the extreme end of things, while constantly using the phone throughout the day, we got close to 21 hours of battery life out of which the screen was on for over 8 hours. Not bad!

We knew it was coming. After the rather disappointing reveal of the 7-inch Galaxy Tab 3, Samsung unveiled two new models yesterday. The 8-inch Tab 3 bears a striking resemblance to the Galaxy Note 8, while the 10.1-inch version extends the design language first introduced in the Galaxy S III smartphone to the 10.1-inch form factor… buttons and all. Both models are mild refreshes of older Tab variants (though the 8-inch Galaxy Tab 3 could bee seen as a mix of the 8.9 and 7.7).

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 – 8 Inch

The 8 inch is what Samsung views as the optimal size for tablets because it has a large enough display that reading and watching movies can be done comfortably without compromising the ability to easily hold it in one hand. The hardware in this device includes:

Now the hardware is more of what we have come to expect from modern tablets, while it’s not a show stopper, it’s also no slouch with a Dual-Core processor being enough to drive most Android applications, especially if it’s the rumored Intel Cloverfield Atom processors. The Tab 3 8 inch should be not only be the in sweet spot of not only size, but also price vs performance.

The 10.1 inch Tab 3 fits into what was the classic form factor of Tablets before the introduction of the Amazon Kindle and Google Nexus 7. The larger size of this tablet is what Samsung considers to be perfect for the entire family because it’s a large enough screen for multiple people to view movies on, kids are also able to play games on it, while parents can use it to check the news and stock prices making it the perfect multimedia device. Behind the display we find hardware that is fairly reminiscent of the previous Tab 3s:

The 10.1 Inch is not vastly superior to the 8 inch when it comes to performance despite it’s larger size, with the same resolution display, less RAM and only a slightly faster CPU clock speed there is little separating the two. While some of you may cry foul with a 3 megapixel rear camera, remember this is a 10.1 inch tablet and if you wanted to take pictures of something you would find a DSLR Camera not only capable of taking much better photos, but also a lot smaller and manageable.

The new Galaxy Tab 3 series won’t blow the competition out of the water when it comes to performance, but given Apple’s dominance of the ‘premium’ tablet market and the only major success stories for Android tablets have been in the cheaper budget orientated market, Samsung’s decision to make a line of products aimed for the budget crowd makes sense from a strategic point of view, especially if they already have the Note 10.1, 8 and Nexus 10 to compete in the premium tablet market space. Despite that I would have liked to see Samsung opt for a higher resolution display on the Galaxy Tab 3 10.1 Inch, HTC proved that technology is now capable of packing a 1920×1080 display into a 4.7 frame, so surely Samsung would have been able to fit such as display in their 10.1 inch tablet without blowing the budget, however the one inexcusable gripe I have is the existence of hardware buttons on all three tablets.

These tablets are expected to hit the market in the beginning of June so be sure to keep a lookout for one if you’re interested in a budget tablet.

While the USA’s smartphone sales market has remained relatively stable to date this year as compared to last, increases in share of sales for iOS (up 2.3 percentage points) and Windows (an increase of 1.8 percentage points) have seen these platforms growing slightly faster than Android (up 1.4 percentage points), year on year, according to data released by Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.

Kantar Worldpanel ComTech analyst Mary-Ann Parlato states, “Verizon and Sprint’s slight increase is thanks to the growth of two key players. For Verizon, Windows’ share rose from 0.2% in the three months ending April 2012 to 6.8% by the period ending April 2013. At Sprint, they continued to reap share increases thanks to their iOS offering- iOS sales share on Sprint grew from 33.4% to 38.4% over the last year.”

iOS took home 41.4% compared to 39.1% the year before. While Android took 51.7% compared to 50.3% the year before. Windows Phone almost doubled their share from 3.8% to 5.6% this year. The most surprising numbers being to RIM/Blackberry. In 2013, they had 0.7%, compared to the 5.3% they had in 2012.

They also took a look at the US carriers shares as well. Everyone gained except for T-Mobile. Which is somewhat surprising since T-Mobile has been seeing lots of new customers lately, and selling the iPhone like crazy. But this study was probably done before T-Mobile started selling the iPhone and their new simple plans. But they dropped from 14.8% last year to 11.3% this year. Of course, Verizon took home the largest share last year and again this year. Even though we hear so much hate about the carrier, people are still loving Verizon enough to switch to their network. They had 24.5% last year and 36.3% this year.

Kantar also suggests that Nokia’s Lumia line was a pretty big win for Windows phone gaining market share in the past year. Even though Windows Phone is still struggling. About 23% of Windows phone users have switched over from Android. Which is a big number, but a bigger number would be 23% of Android users switching to Windows phone.

Is it the Galaxy Note 8 ? Is it an enlarged Galaxy S3 ? No ! It is the WickedLeak Wammy Desire 2 Tablet !
We recently received our review unit from www.WickedLeak.org and this is the ‘In-depth’ review of the same device by The Android Cop .
We have divided the review into some categories namely –
1) Hardware(Design and Feel)
2) Software(UI and Gaming and Benchmark Performance)
3)General usability ( Battery , sound , display , camera )
4)Pros and Cons.
5) Final Verdict .

As for the in-box content , the box contained 1 piece of the following- Wickedleak Wammy Desire 2 Tablet , Travel Charger , USB OTG Cable, Micro USB to USB converter chord , User Manual . You don’t need to worry about buying a screen guard for the WickedLeak Wammy Desire 2 , as the device has a good quality screen-guard already installed , and you just have to pull off the mask over it , which is a neat trick , and will be certainly appreciated by everyone . 

Before we proceed further to review , we wish to tell you that we We shall also valuate every category by a brief method , that is , how much the device manages to score out of 10 in every category.

So here we begin our review -

1) HARDWARE (Design and Feel) -

We took the Wammy Desire 2 out of the box, and it felt nothing like the other mid-range tablets . The Build Quality is almost as good as the Galaxy Tab 2, if not better than it .
The tablet is fairly thick at 10.9 mm, and the 298 grams of weight is acceptable as well for a device of this size. The tablet looks very much alike to the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 .
Some people may find the bezels a bit too wide though . The tablet has a Charging port , mic , Mini – HDMI port , External SD card slot , Hard reset key , 3.5mm audio jack and a micro usb port at the bottom . Yes , the tablet does not charge through the micro USB like most of the recent devices , and the provided charger will remind you of the circular pin charger that Nokia used in their Symbian devices .

The Camera is located at the back and adjacent to it is the flash and the loudspeaker , Just like the Galaxy S3 . The back is otherwise plain , but if you look very carefully , “EXYNOS” is written on the back . Apart from that , there are no signs of a company logo , and that sure surprised us . 
Overall , you get something worthy of what you pay . The device feels solid and reliable unlike several other tablets in the same price range .

Score – 8/10

2) SOFTWARE  (UI , Gaming and Benchmark Performance) -

Our review unit had the latest Android version , the 4.2.2 JellyBean installed . The UI is more or less the Vanilla Android ui itself. The pre-loaded apps include the Google Chrome browser , the iReader app , ES File Explores , Es Task Manager , Flash player , etc .

The Ui is pretty smooth and fluid , thanks to the Exynos 4412 and the 1 gb DDR3 RAM . The device comes pre rooted . So you don’t need to worry about rooting it afterwards.
There are minor software bugs , like the pull-down notification bar makes the screen flicker sometimes , but there are no serious issues .
The device could smoothly play 1080p videos in MX Player . As for the Gaming, the tablet had no issues while playing high end Games like Asphalt 7 and the GTA Vice City and the device rarely lagged .

The processor and the ram again give it the advantage in gaming and benchmarks . The device vibrates while playing games , and it sure gives a nice touch to the gameplay . 
As for the benchmarks , the Wammy Desire 2 scored a very respectable 12032 in the AnTuTu benchmarks .

The benchmark’s total score is very close to the Tegra 3 touting highly popular Asus Google Nexus 7 . The Nexus 7′s total score is 12726 . While the Wammy Desire 2 still scores more than it in the RAM , CPU Float point, 2D Graphics and the Database IO test .
Not to mention that the Wammy desire 2 beats the Galaxy Tab 2 fair and square.

Score – 7/10
3) GENERAL (Battery , Sound , display , camera , Storage ) -

BATTERY- The device has a 3300 mAh battery , which is average and the usage time of device is about 3.5 to 4 hours , with 50% screen brightness and wifi switched on . The usage time dropped to around 3 hours with full brightness .
We suggest that before you conduct any battery test , you should calibrate the battery first . We did the same and noticed considerable differences in the battery performance .

SOUND- The device’s loudspeaker is pretty good. It is what you’d expect from a device of this size and the speaker is good enough ,so we feel .

Display – Wickedleak Wammy Desire 2 flaunts a 7″ , 5 point multitouch capacitive display with a resolution of 800 x 1232 and a PPI desnsity of 160 . The color reproduction is good and the display is bright enough .
The display is not and IPS , but does behave like one. The viewing angles are much better when compared to the other tablets in the same price-category . The viewing angles , we felt , are as good as the ones on Galaxy Tab 2.

Camera- This is the main Letdown of this device , but we doubt if anyone is really going to use their tablet PC to capture photos . It has a 2 megapixel Rear camera , with a flash . But the image quality was below the average .
The 1.3 mp camera is located on the front for video calls , but the quality is mediocre again .

Storage – The device has 8 Gigabytes of internal storage . Out of which , 5.28 gb is user available . The app memory is 1 GB . The good part is that , the device does have a micro sd card slot , which lets you expand the memory by a whooping 32 more gigabytes .
This can be very useful for most users so as to store their content on the go .
Also , the device did supported the flash-drives we connected via the USB-OTG cable , which is a boon .

Score – 7/10
4) PROS & CONS – The WickedLeak Wammy Desire 2 is certainly better than we hoped it to be , and it managed surprise us . So here are the good and bad bits of this tablet -

PROS – 1> The 1.6 ghz Quad Core cortex A9 Exynos 4412 coupled with Mali 400 quadcore GPU is the chief attraction and the best part of this device , making it’s responsiveness comparable to that of several high end devices .
2> The tablet comes pre-installed with the currently latest Android Version , the 4.2.2 JellyBean , compared to several other devices that come with Android 4.1 or even 4.0 ICS out of the box .
3> It is not short on connectivity by any means , supporting blurtooth , wifi, ethernet , 3g via USB Dongle and wifi direct as well .
4> A nice display and the expandable memory option are cherry on the cake .
5> The build quality is nice , and the device feels solid in hands .
6> The device is pre rooted , so it saves the efforts of rooting the device .

CONS – 1> Below average camera quality .
2> Minor software bugs .
3> Mediocre battery performance .

5) FINAL VERDICT – Coming to the final verdict , the tablet is certainly better than you’d expect it to be . This device can be an excellent alternative to the Galaxy Tab 2 , if you want more processor power and are ready to scarify the camera quality. It can even go head-on against Nexus 7 .
Yes, there are some minor software bugs , but they do not cause any troubles as such . You should consider buying this device if you want a high performance android tablet , with good connectivity and general features under 10,000 INR.

Sony announced today that it has started the roll-out of Xperia Tablet Z globally. The tablet, which was originally showcased in Japan in January 2013, is a successor to the company’s previous released Xperia Tablet S. The company has not revealed the local pricing right now, but the tablet will be sold starting $499 in the United States.Sony Xperia Tablet Z will be released in 4G/ 3G and Wi-Fi only versions and should be available widely in the intended markets over this week.

This much-anticipated 1080p tablet is the larger brother to the Xperia Z smartphone, in both design and hardware terms. Sony’s US store still shows a pre-order doesn’t list any retailers, but Amazon shows the 16GB and 32GB models at $499 and $599, respectively, arriving on Friday the 24th. Newegg has it coming in the day after.

“Xperia Tablet Z has received an incredibly positive response since it was announced and this is demonstrated by the strong pre-orders the product has received,” said Tomokazu Tajima , Senior Vice President, Head of UX Creative Design and Planning, at Sony Mobile Communications. “We believe we have created the ultimate tablet experience and one that is uniquely Sony. Who else would design a tablet that can be used as a media center, a TV remote control – as well as sync seamlessly with Xperia Z and be submerged for 30 minutes underwater!?”

Just in case you need a refresher: the Xperia Tablet Z uses the same Snapdragon S4 1.5Ghz quad-core processor, Adreno 320 GPU, and 2GB of RAM of the Xperia Z smartphone, plus that stylish glass body and industrial design. Sony calls the 6.9mm Xperia Tablet Z the thinnest, lightest device in its class (10-inch tablets with a waterproof rating) and after handling it ourselves at Mobile World Congress, we won’t argue. The Xperia Tablet Z is easily one of the most stylish, well-designed Android tablets available, and might even justify its premium price, though we’d like to get our hands on final hardware to inspect the Android 4.1 build and battery life.

Sony’s press release mentions that both WiFi and 4G models of the Xperia Tablet Z will be available. The 4G version hasn’t appeared on Sony’s US store, but given the company’s surprisingly enlightened attitude towards unlocked phones for the US market, it seems at least possible that they’ll release a mobile broadband model here at some point.

The tougher dust and water resistant build has lead to a slight design change, like a few bolts on the back to tighten the handset’s seal, but overall the Active doesn’t look too dissimilar to the mainstream Galaxy S4.

Also, Samsung seems to have opted for physical buttons rather than the traditional capacitive keys, which might be a turn-off for those who prefer a minimalist appearance.

Similar to the benchmark result that was spotted over the weekend, which suggested that the Galaxy S4 Active would be opting for an older Snapdragon S4 CPU, the Galaxy S4 Active’s hardware specs are still a little up in the air in these pictures too.

According to the snap of the handset running AnTuTu, the device is running on a quad-core 1890MHz processor combined with an Adreno 320 GPU. This pretty much matches the clock speed of the regular Snapdragon 600-powered Galaxy S4, but it could also be using an overclocked Snapdragon S4 Pro. If that’s the case, we’d be a bit concerned about the battery drain and heat output of a S4 chip at those speeds.

Other than the processor, all the other specs appear to be the same. The handset still has a 5-inch 1080p display and should ship with the same software and Android version as the regular Galaxy S4.Whilst there’s still no official information available on the specs or a release date, we’re expecting to hear an official announcement about the Galaxy S4 Active in the near future.

Thanks to a test firmware that leaked online, we now have an idea of what features are likely to make the jump to the Galaxy S3. The firmware, codenamed I9300XXUFME3, has been made available online by the guys at Sam Mobile, who specified that this is a test firmware, and that more features could be included in the final release.

A video of the firmware in action reveal some of the features that Galaxy S3 users should expect in the close future, starting with those coming from the S4:

• Improved lock screen, similar to that on the Galaxy S4: users will get to use multiple widgets, change the appearance and size of the clock, new unlock effects, and more
• The new screen modes launched on the Galaxy S4, Adapt Display and Professional Photo
• New Settings UI, identical to the S4’s
• Voice controls (from S4)
• Improved S Voice (from S4)
• Daydream
• Navigation mode
• Actionable notifications

Notably absent are the many software features that Samsung introduced for the camera of the Galaxy S4. Features like Eraser mode or Sound and Shot aren’t hardware dependent, and should work in theory on the Galaxy S3, the Note 2, and other Samsung devices.

Sam Mobile also provides instructions on how to install the new firmware. Note that this isn’t by any mean an official release, though the leakers claim that they have tested it and that it works just like an official version.

After launching BlackBerry Q5 and rolling out 10.1 update for BlackBerry Z10, BlackBerry turned focus towards its popular messaging service- BlackBerry Messenger (or BBM in short). BBM is said to be the groundbreaking method of Instant Messaging which allows messaging your contacts having BlackBerry devices without wasting money on normal SMS. It was so successful, that it gave rise to several proprietary and cross-platform apps like iMessage (for iOS), Whatsapp (for all mobile platforms), WeChat (for all mobile platforms and even on web) and many more.

According to BlackBerry, BBM has more than 60 million monthly users sending and receiving more than 10 billion messages per day. In terms of engagements, nearly 51 million users use the app for at least one and half hours daily and they read the message within 20 seconds of sending it.

BBM Channels

BBM Channels feature will let users connect to and follow their favorite brands, celebrities and businesses. It’s similar to the Twitter where an individual can follow handles of their interest and get their updates in real time. Users can also engage and participate by commenting, liking and sharing the updates.

Channels will have following features:

1) Channel Creation- Not only brands, even a user can create their own channel with a simple click and can have unlimited followers for the updates. The channel can be managed on the BlackBerry smartphone and on the web.

2) Channel Discovery- BBM will offer a carousel like interface for finding new and interesting channels. The channels can be shared via BBM chats, PIN or QR Code.

3) View and Subscribe- Each channel will be having a profile which user can see before following, subscribing to a channel will give real time updates and notifications.

4) Participate- Users can comment and like updates from the channels and some channels can have one-on-one chat with users.

5) Monitor Engagement- The channel owners will be having built-in tools to measure and assess followers interactions.

BBM for Android and iOS

Based on usage statistics of BBM and its ability delivery messages quickly, BlackBerry is keen to bring this experience to Android and iOS platforms. The app will be free and available for download in summer. The first version will have following features:

Our Thoughts

BlackBerry’s plan to making BBM more relevant and driving usage by bringing it on other OS is a good option, but we think its too little too late. While BBM is credited with the advent IM services, since than many awesome apps have come which are already available for various mobile platforms and offer sharing of photos, videos, audios, voice and video calling and many more features. Even the channels like option is already present in WeChat which lets user follow their favorite celebs and news websites.

What is the biggest advantage of buying Nexus 4? It is a Nexus device – built by LG as per guidelines from Google directly. Running a pure Android version, it is the Google’s reference device for other manufacturers.

What can be better than Google’s implementation of Android? Bloated manufacturer skins – certainly not.

In addition, Nexus devices get guaranteed Android updates, within days of Google’s announcement of a new Android version.  No more looking for custom ROMs to get latest Android version (you can alweays use them for other reasons, but you don’t need them for Android updates).

Excellent value for money

Powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor, it is almost as powerful as the latest flagships from other smartphone makers. As it is six months old, you can’t expect it to crush the latest phones in the benchmarks, but it will give you a great real-life performance and can easily take on any task you throw at it.

With 2GB of RAM inside, you don’t need to worry about your phone being sluggish when there are lots of apps open.

The camera is decent enough and also gives you access to Photo Sphere feature to take 360 degree images.

And, don’t compare the India pricing to the US Google Play price ($349 + $50 (taxes + shipping)), we can’t expect LG India to match that, anyways, you are paying just INR 4,000 premium over the US price, which is a better deal than most countries that got the phone directly from LG.

There are obviously some issues with the phone as are with all other phones, none of the smartphones are perfect.

Intel seems to have finally got hold of the bigger fish – Samsung. As per the latest benchmark results that have surfaced in GFXbench database, Samsung is using the Intel Atom Z2560 Clover Trail+ dual-core processor in its new 10-inch tablet.

Carrying the model number GT-P5200, the tablet has been code-named Santos, the same codename that we had heard in the past associated with Samsung’s rumoured 10-inch tablet.

The benchmark listing also reveals the processor will be clocked at 1.6GHz and will come with PowerVR SGX 544 MP2 GPU. Other features of the tablet will include 10.1-inch WXGA (1280×800) display and Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Apart from the GT-P5200 listing, a benchmark listing for GT-P5210has also been spotted, which is going to be the Wi-Fi only version of the tablet.

Other details were not confirmed in these benchmark listings but a previous report had suggested that this tablet will come with 5MP rear camera and 16/ 32GB of internal storage.

Apart from the obvious tablet details leak, the presence of an Intel Atom processor in Samsung’s Android tablet is the more important news here. Intel has been struggling to get bigger manufacturers use its silicon in their Android products, however we recently saw Asus use Atom processor in Fonepad and now Samsung – seems like Intel’s smartphone/ tablet dream might finally come true.

The performance of the Avantree Roxa is comparable to that of most Bluetooth connections. The device’s range is limited to 10 feet, but that can be cut short if you try to send the signal through thick, solid walls. For instance, I can walk around my living room with my phone in my hand and it plays fine wherever I go. I can go about halfway into the kitchen before the signal starts to fade. If I go into the basement, directly under the living room, the reception will pick up again. Now, if I go out on the front porch and close the door, the signal fades instantly — the porch is ten feet maybe from where the Roxa is installed on my stereo receiver.

Samsung has certainly found a good reason for keeping the back of its devices removable with the line of flip covers offered up across the Galaxy S and Note line. Obviously, the best part of the S-View cover opposed to the regular flip covers is the small window that will show you relevant information without having to open it up.

It works much like Apple’s iPad Smart Covers and multiple clones that have appeared in the past two years or so. There are hidden magnets on the front that both hold the flap into place and tell the Galaxy S4 that the cover is closed. While this method on other devices simply turns them off, the S View cover tells the SGS4 to illuminate just part of the screen – the segment seen under the window.

While plastic, the S View cover has a synthetic leather feel to it and is plush enough to, almost, justify the price tag. It’s sturdy too, so you’ll feel your phone is protected – although Pocket-lint wasn’t about to fling a Samsung executive’s Galaxy S4 around to find out.

It’s padded and soft on the interior, on the underside of the front flap at least, so is designed to keep the screen from scratches and also remove surface grime in use.Other than that, it’s the window that really sets the S View cover apart, and makes it a great accompaniment to a great phone.

Calls can be answered, and you can easily see the time, date, along with any notifications you might have missed with the S-View cover and the extra functionality for the S-View cover may be worth it to many. It’s definitely a fun accessory.

One should keep in mind that this isn’t a protective case. The “cover” will protect the face of the device, which is the most important, but nothing else is protected. The cover gives the user a bit of privacy, with protection the last bit of its functionality. Either way, the novelty of the S-View cover will likely be the main reason for getting this accessory, and we don’t see a problem with that.

The S-View Flip Cover isn’t perfect, though. It’s a bit irritating when trying to turn down the volume on the Galaxy S 4, and I found it rather difficult to hold when taking photos. Changing the way you hold your phone to take pictures is easy enough but changing the volume on the phone is no longer a one-handed operation for me. This may get a bit easier when the cover has been on the device for a while, but it remains one of the more annoying “side-effects” of having this flip cover.While it’s not without a few minor gripes, the S-View Flip Cover remains one of the coolest accessories for the Samsung Galaxy S 4. We still have some time until we see more accessories, like the wireless charging pad to roll out, but we’d say Samsung is off to a good start in the accessory department for its latest flagship device.
